Mother’s Day can be a fun holiday to celebrate in the classroom because it gives young kindergarteners a chance to focus on their moms or other special women in their lives. Whether you’re planning a small event in your classroom or sending home a little gift, it’s helpful to have some low-prep but meaningful projects on hand for your celebration. In this post, I’m sharing three of my favorite ways to celebrate Mother’s Day in kindergarten.

Celebrating Mother's Day in Kindergarten

Observing Mother’s Day in Kindergarten

Before we dive into specific Mother’s Day activities for kindergarten, I wanted to mention that this day can bring up a mix of emotions for students. Not every child lives with or has a relationship with their mother. As teachers, we always want to approach these celebrations with care.

The activities I’m sharing in this post are designed to be flexible and can easily be adapted to honor any special person in a child’s life, whether that’s a grandmother, aunt, guardian, or another important grown-up.

Kindergarten Activities for Mother’s Day

The goal of observing Mother’s Day in kindergarten is to help students express their appreciation and love in a meaningful way. These activities can do just that! As an added bonus, students can practice important academic skills as they complete these crafts and activities.

1. Mother’s Day Read Aloud

A great way to introduce the topic of Mother’s Day is with a read aloud. There are many different book options that you can use to be sensitive to the circumstances of the students in your classroom.

The front cover of Koala Lou by Mem Fox

One of my favorite books to read aloud around Mother’s Day time is Koala Lou by Mem Fox. (affiliate link) This book is an adorable story about a young koala who feels like her mom doesn’t have time to say “Koala Lou, I DO love you!” like she used to. Koala Lou decides to sign up for (and hopefully win) the Bush Olympics in an attempt to hear her mom say she loves her again. The Olympic games don’t go as planned, but there is still a sweet ending.

As you read this book together as a class, you could pause and give students the chance to practice making predictions and inferences. Do they think Koala Lou will win the event? How do they think Koala Lou’s mother will react? They can use clues from the story to explain their thinking.

2. Mother’s Day Craft

One thing I love about Koala Lou is that it shows the importance of communicating our feelings to the people we care about. This Mother’s Day craft is one way that students can do that!

With the example of Koala Lou, students can think about the different reasons why they love their mother or another special person in their life. They will write one of these reasons on each petal of a flower craft. This project can easily be adapted to focus on any recipient, since the prompt at the top simply states, “I love you because you are…”.

After completing the task of writing on the petals and decorating the flower, you can then add a picture of the student to the center of the craft; this is when student photo stickers come in handy! The final result is a thoughtful gift that can double as a sweet kindergarten memento.

Crafts are such a great way for students to improve their hand strength and coordination. As students write on and color this craft, they are working hard on their fine motor skills! However, since it’s so fun for them to create this gift for someone special, they often don’t realize they’re hard at work!

3. Mother’s Day Booklet

Speaking of motivating students to work hard, it’s always a bonus when we can get students excited about writing. After all, writing is one of the most challenging tasks we ask our kindergarten students to do during the school year! This Mother’s Day booklet is full of special writing activities that your students will be excited to complete.

Four pages from a printable Mother's Day booklet

This is another project that can easily be adjusted to be sensitive to all students. It includes a variety of different pages that students can assemble to create a booklet dedicated to their mom or another special person in their lives. The final result is a sweet keepsake that is sure to give the grownups a chuckle. Some of the writing activities in this booklet include an “All About ____” page, a page about the student’s favorite meal she cooks, a page about her favorite activity, things she’s good at, and more!

You can choose to complete these writing activities as a whole class or in small groups. There are also enough page options that you can choose the ones that best meet the needs and circumstances of your students. All of the pages have space to draw or a picture writing prompt to color, so students can also express themselves through illustrations.

One of my favorite parts of a project like this is that students are motivated to do their best work. Since they know the final product will be going to their moms as a gift, they are more careful with their letter formation and coloring.
