Kindergarteners love to learn about all animals, but there’s just something about ocean animals that really grabs their attention! Whenever there is a topic that students are really interested in, it’s a good idea to incorporate it into your writing block. Since writing can be so challenging for students, it’s always helpful to include topics and activities that will motivate and engage your beginning writers. With that in mind, I’m going to share some free ocean writing prompts for kindergarten that you can use to enhance writing time in your classroom.

4 Benefits of Picture Writing Prompts

The ocean writing prompts that I’m going to share with you aren’t just a list of questions or sentence starters. Instead, these are illustrated writing prompts that include pictures of an ocean animal and a sentence starter.

Picture writing prompts are a very helpful tool for kindergarten writing instruction. Here are just a few of the reasons why these writing prompts can be so effective for beginning writers:

1. Prevent Writer’s Block

One of the biggest hurdles for young kindergarteners during the writing block is deciding what to write about. When students are staring at a blank page, even when given a topic or prompt, they can have a difficult time deciding where to start. A picture prompt provides a visual cue that can inspire a sentence with less effort or stress. Writing takes stamina for kindergarten students, and we don’t want them to expend all of their energy on choosing a topic before they even pick up a pencil!

2. Differentiate Writing Practice

In addition to providing a visual cue, picture writing prompts can support students through the use of differentiated sentence starters. Some students might only have the writing stamina to complete a sentence starter with a few words. Other students might benefit from the extra fine motor practice of a traceable sentence starter. Finally, some students are ready to write without a sentence starter. This allows you to meet the needs of all students during your writing block.

3. Engage Early Finishers

Since there is such a wide variety of writing skills in a kindergarten classroom, there are often students who finish their work while others are still working. The picture writing prompt has a built-in early finisher activity, since students can color and add details to the picture after they have finished their sentence. In addition to keeping students on track, this activity can give them additional time for much-needed fine motor practice!

4. Enhance Thematic Units

If you like to use themed learning activities in your classroom, picture writing prompts can be a meaningful addition to your unit! These themed activities can give students the chance to use the new vocabulary they are learning.

Ocean Writing Prompts for Kindergarten

If you’re planning an ocean unit for your students, I have a free set of ocean writing prompts that you can use in your classroom. This set of picture writing prompts focuses on these eleven ocean animals: Jellyfish, sea turtle, octopus, puffer fish, shark, manatee, starfish, crab, dolphin, fish, and whale.

Multiple Options

Each ocean animal writing page comes with three different options, including a sentence starter, a traceable sentence starter, and a blank page. This will allow you to differentiate for the needs of your students. Even though each student will have a slightly different writing page, they will still be writing about the same picture. This makes it easy for everyone to participate in the pre-writing discussions as well as the writing celebration once the activity is complete.

Multiple Uses

There are many different ways to use these ocean animal writing prompts:

  • Morning Work: You can welcome your students to class with one of these ocean animal writing prompts each morning. If you prefer to start with a more open-ended activity in the morning, you could have them focus on coloring and adding to the picture. Then their pages will be ready for your writing block later in the day.
  • Literacy Centers: Since these prompts can be tailored to individual students’ needs, they could work on a picture writing prompt as a station during literacy centers.
  • Journal Writing: You could assemble these prompts into a journal for some structured independent writing time.
  • Thematic Unit: These writing prompts can help you enhance an ocean unit in your classroom. You can incorporate the prompts of the animals you discuss throughout the unit. This gives students the chance to use the vocabulary that they’ve been learning in the unit!
  • Early Finishers: You could also assemble a packet of picture writing prompts that students can keep in their desks or cubbies. That way, when they find themselves with extra time, they can pull out their writing prompt packets and choose an animal to write about.

I’m sure you’ll be able to find the best way to incorporate these writing prompts into your daily learning routine! You can choose an option that works best for your students’ writing skills and stamina.

Multiple Cover Page Options

Since there are so many ways that you could incorporate these writing prompts into your classroom, I’ve included several cover page options. This makes it easy to choose a cover for the sentence starters that fits the way you’re using them in the classroom. You can also print and use individual pages instead of assembling them into packets.
