The Benefits of Using Seasonal Writing Prompts in Kindergarten

When it comes to writing practice in kindergarten, keeping students motivated and engaged can be a challenge. After all, writing is one of the most difficult tasks our young learners are asked to do during the day! One of my favorite ways to keep students motivated to practice writing is using seasonal writing prompts in kindergarten.

What Are Seasonal Writing Prompts?

Instead of giving students a blank piece of paper and asking them to write whatever they’d like, teachers often turn to writing prompts. (I love to use picture writing prompts.) These prompts can be about anything, but I’ve found that it can be most effective to use writing prompts that correspond to the current season. These could be prompts about the actual seasons of spring, summer, fall, and winter. Students might write about the weather or things they do in those seasons. This is likely the first thing that comes to mind when hearing the phrase “seasonal writing prompts”. 

On the other hand, seasonal writing prompts could also be based on topics or themes that match the season. For example, you might use writing prompts about arctic animals during the cold winter months or apple writing prompts in the fall. Seasonal writing prompts can also include holidays or other celebrations that fall in that season.

5 Benefits of Using Seasonal Writing Prompts

It might feel like matching writing prompts to the season is just “one more thing” piled onto your already-overflowing plate. I get it! However, incorporating the current season into writing practice can benefit your students in many different ways.

1. Review Relevant Vocabulary

Kindergarten is a grade level where students learn new vocabulary words left and right. It can be a lot of new information for these young learners! The best way to help these vocabulary words stick is for students to actually use these words in conversation and in writing. Seasonal writing prompts give students the chance to review and use vocabulary that’s relevant to their lives at that moment. Plus, when the vocabulary words are top-of-mind, it’s easier for students to recall them for their writing.

For example, students who are learning vocabulary related to arctic animals are much more likely to remember the names of the animals if they also write about them. Otherwise, these new words tend to go in one ear and out the other. 

2. Channel Seasonal Excitement

We all know how excited students can be when a fun holiday or seasonal activity is approaching. It can be hard for students to focus on the task at hand with all of the anticipation in the air. This is especially true for tasks that are generally more difficult for students, like writing. 

Seasonal writing prompts can give students the chance to channel some of their excitement into a worthwhile learning activity. In fact, seasonal writing activities can be extra motivating for young kindergarten students! They are often eager to write about the holiday or activity that they’re looking forward to. Any time we can add extra motivation to writing practice is a win!

3. Add Variety to Writing Practice

Another common hurdle for writing practice in kindergarten is that it can start to feel repetitive and stale for students. Kindergarten students have to focus so much on letter and word formation that every writing prompt can feel like a chore.

There’s something about a seasonal writing prompt, especially a picture writing prompt, that can add variety to writing practice. Even though the routine is the same (which is helpful for young students), the variety in the prompts can keep the writing practice fresh and engaging.

4. Enhance Content Area Instruction

Themed and seasonal writing prompts can also help you enhance content area instruction. You can use writing prompts to tie in with your science or social studies lessons! For example, this journal of space writing prompts is the perfect addition to a science unit about space.

These writing prompts give students the chance to review and use the content area vocabulary they’re learning. Plus, students will be more likely to remember what they’ve been learning about the topic when they have a chance to write about it. A journal filled with themed writing prompts is something students are always proud to take home. Discussing their writing at home gives students another opportunity to review what they’ve been learning about in class.

5. Increase Motivation and Engagement

To sum it up, seasonal and themed writing prompts are an easy way to increase motivation and engagement during writing instruction and practice. One reason for this is that the writing prompts can be differentiated to best meet the needs of students. Some students love to look at a picture and come up with their own sentences. For other students, it can be challenging to decide what to write about.

These seasonal writing prompts include sentence starters or blank lines depending on the needs of your students. When the writing activity is differentiated like this, students can feel more successful. This is an easy way to help students stay motivated to practice writing.
