As a former kindergarten and special education teacher, I totally get the struggles of teaching writing. Like many teachers, I was forced to figure out writing from scratch. No real writing curriculum, just a boatload of standards. (I’m sure you’ve been there.)
My classroom was a mixed bag, too – students who could write sentences independently and others who could barely hold a pencil. The bar was high, but the resources? Nowhere to be found.
So, I started making my own.
I’ll never forget one student who hated writing. I gave him a coloring page with a sentence starter and boom – he went from “I don’t know what to write” to writing a full sentence on his own.
I knew I was onto something.
